People in the classes, held in Albany, appeared to venerate Mr. Raniere, Sylvie testified during his racketeering and sex trafficking trial. The experience left her thinking she would never take another class, Sylvie said.
The Barbican's new exhibition which traces the history of sex in art raises difficult questions, says Frances Wilson. When police seized a photograph from the Baltic art gallery in Gateshead recently, taken by the celebrated American photographer Nan Goldin and owned by Sir Elton John, the directors of the Barbican art gallery must have felt pretty nervous. The Barbican's new show, Seduced: Art and Sex from Antiquity to Now, deals with precisely the difference between art and pornography that the debate over Goldin's image of two small girls has reignited.

Seduced which opened at the Barbican today, bills itself as a survey show of "art and sex from antiquity to now," but is really something far more shocking - an evocative, intelligent, and sensitive overview of sex. Seduced seems like an easy sell for the Barbican, especially after their Nobuyoshi Araki retrospective received such well-deserved high regard, but in actuality nothing in this show is easy. Because every generation wants to imagine that it invented or perfected sexuality, Seduced's most saleable shock-value comes from exposing today's porn-savvy viewers to roughly works spanning all orientations, 2, years and various cultures.

This woman is selfish and manipulative, cynical and a sexual predator, often villainous, and always a survivor. The femme fatale archetype found in literature and art presents seductive and mysterious women whose charms ensnare lovers and lead them into compromising, dangerous, and often deadly situations. The folklore and myth systems of almost every ancient culture are sewn together with the femme fatale archetype and she appears at fundamental levels in ancient cosmologies, religions, philosophies, in creation myths, in the pages of ancient holy books, and in folk stories and fairy-tales.
